  1. NTSB Determines Cause Behind Fatal 2011 Trinity II Incident

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the probable cause of the accident in the southern Gulf of Mexico was the failure of Trinity Liftboats (the vessel owner/operator) and Geokinetics (the chartering organization) to adequately plan and prepare for a rapidly and locally developing hurricane. Contributing to the fatalities and injuries was the failure of the Trinity II crewmembers to make effective use of the vessel's lifesaving equipment, resulting in their prolonged exposure to the elements while awaiting rescue.

  2. The Coast Guard has ended its active search for two people who went missing Saturday from Crystal Rock, Ohio near the southern shore of Sandusky Bay, Sunday night. The missing are 30-year-old Jonathan Francis and 12-year-old Viola Francis. The two were last seen leaving their home in blue and green kayaks Saturday afternoon by a neighbor and were reported to be missing Sunday morning by a friend.
  3. Authorities Release More Audio Samples of False Distress Calls

We at Now Marine are stunned that anyone would behave in the manner being investigated by the Coast Guard.  If you can cast any light on this, please step up to the plate...

  4. Dropping temperatures require increased vigilance
    .
With colder weather forthcoming, and the accompanying formation of ice to the waterways of the Great Lakes Region, the 9th Coast Guard District reminds people to use extra precautions when planning recreational activities on cold water and frozen ponds, streams, rivers and lakes.
  5. How To Win Your Own Boat
    .
How to win your own boat? Not easy, dear reader - not easy at all .... unless, that is, your name happens to be Jeff Gordon, and you can drive like the wind. Not a NASCAR fan? Never heard of Jeff Gordon? Well, never mind. Since you're on the Now Marine web site, we'll hazard a guess that you might be interested in matters marine - such as the boat he's just won for outstanding performance at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, a Contender Bay boat with 250 horsepower eager to rattle skeletons and keep dental technicians fully employed.
  6. Where in the World is Sandy?
Anybody seen Sandy? Any idea where she might have gone? No, no, no - not Superstorm Sandy. Sandy Island! Somehow, somewhere, someone has towed away a 15-mile-long island and apparently sunk it in seven hundred fathoms of water! No, I'm not pulling your leg - and no, it's not April the 1st. An island that's been on the official maps of Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Russia and the USA since as far back as 1774 has simply vanished, and it has nothing to do with undersea volcanoes or any other such natural phenomena.
  7. What do you make of this? Twice this past week, the national Rescue Coordination Center in New Zealand has responded to distress calls, in both instances because women had suffered a fractured ankle while hiking with organized groups. The first accident occurred in a remote spot on Stewart Island, home to the Rakiura National Park, off the southern tip of Southland, and the young lady concerned, a 24-year-old in a party of three, was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital on the mainland within about an hour.
  8. Are you one of the nation's army of avid fishermen? If you are, you might be pleased to hear about something that we learned of earlier this week. The American Fishing Tackle Company, or AFTCO, recently added to its long list of very honorable credentials with cash donations totalling $500,000 to organizations working for the improvement of our salt-water fishing environment. Now, before you ask, no - we at Now Marine don't sell any AFTCO products, so this is not a subtle effort to gain your custom; we simply admire what AFTCO has done, and believe it's appropriate to share our admiration with you.

  10. Even if you weren't alive at the time, it's likely that you've heard of the Exxon Valdez and the environmental tragedy that unfolded in 1989 when the ship ran aground on Bligh Reef, in Alaska's Prince William Sound. If the name of the reef is vaguely familiar, it should be: it was named after Captain William Bligh, of "Mutiny on the Bounty" fame, by another famous naval officer - explorer Captain James Cook. The images that emerged from the spill of about a half-million barrels of crude oil, in one of America's most pristine waterways, were ghastly beyond belief - and the environmental impact echoed throughout the nation.
  11. We were called by a customer looking for an Otterbox case for his iPhone 4S. In the course of the conversation, he asked why it is that these cases appear to be marked down to very low prices on marine electronics websites such as Now Marine. We can't speak for our competitors, but here's our reason: mariners use cell-phones just as much as anyone else, and by selling at rock-bottom prices we hope to attract some of those mariners to the Now Marine web-site. Some time ago, I was taking fly-fishing lessons from a Marylander who chose to wear a kilt; when I asked him why, his answer was so obvious that I could have kicked myself: "It's my bait, young fella' - gets people along to take lessons.

  12. We often have a small team working in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland, installing marine equipment on behalf of our customers, and this usually lasts for a few days. Obviously we try to group these installation activities as much as possible, because even the nearest point of the Bay is a good few miles away from our warehouse - and also from the homes of our field engineers. After many trips to the area, we found a really good motel to stay at when we just can't finish up in a single day - the Super 8 hotel in Prince Frederick, Maryland.
